Terminus [ Euro ]

Definition 1
Name der europäischen Gemeinschaftswährung, die zu Beginn der dritten Stufe der Wirtschafts- und Währungsunion am 1. Jänner 1999 in den Euro-Ländern eingeführt wurde. 1 Euro setzt sich aus 100 Cent zusammen. Der ISO-Währungscode lautet EUR, das Symbol € wird ebenfalls verwendet. Im Jänner 2002 fand in den 12 Euro-Ländern die Euro-Bargeldumstellung statt, die ersten Euro-Banknoten und -Münzen wurden ausgegeben. Mit dem 28. Februar 2002 verloren die nationalen Vorgängerwährungen des Euro den Status als gesetzliches Zahlungsmittel.

Laut EU-Vorgabe werden Euro und Cent nicht gebeugt; diese Regelung gilt insbesondere für offizielle Dokumente und Rechtstexte. In deutschsprachigen Publikationen der EZB wird diese Konvention durchgängig eingehalten.

€, das von der Europäischen Kommission entwickelte Symbol für den Euro, ist vom griechischen Epsilon abgeleitet und verkörpert den ersten Buchstaben des Wortes "Europa". Name of the single European currency introduced in the euro area countries at the beginning of the third stage of Economic and Monetary Union on January 1, 1999. 1 euro is divided into 100 cent. The ISO currency code is EUR, and the symbol € is also used. In January 2002, the twelve euro area countries mastered the euro cash changeover and issued euro banknotes and coins. Finally, on February 28, 2002, the currencies of the euro area countries ceased to be legal tender.
