Clearing: Nach einer Plausibilisierung der Verkaufs- und Kaufdaten ("Validation") werden die einzelnen Handelspositionen je Teilnehmer saldiert ("Netting"), d.h. für jeden Teilnehmer werden wertpapier- und geldseitig Nettopositionen gebildet. Dabei differenziert man zwischen bilateralem und multilateralem Netting, wobei bei ersterem nur zwischen jeweils zwei Handelspartnern, bei letzterem zwischen allen Handelspartnern die Positionen verrechnet werden. Ziel des Nettings ist eine Minimierung der notwendigen Liquiditätsflüsse und Transaktionen. Ausserdem berechnet die Clearingorganistion die Risiken je Teilnehmer und verwaltet diese ("Positioning").

Beim Clearing wird vor Ermittlung der Endpositionen für die Abrechnung für jedes einzelne Geschäft sichergestellt, dass sich Verkäufer und Käufer auf dieselbe Transaktion geeinigt haben und der Verkäufer auch tatsächlich Eigentümer der von ihm veräußerten Wertpapiere ist.
