Bancassurance can mean banks and insurance companies being owned within the same group. Or it can imply a distribution agreement, tying one bank to selling the products of a particular insurance company. Although now an internationally used term, there is still no unequivocal dictionary definition. Bancassurance means the former in some countries of the world and the latter in others. In a third set of nations - the UK included - it barely exists as a concept at all. Whatever the parameters, few would dispute that France is the capital of bancassurance. In no other country is there such a concentration of banks owning life assurance companies and banks selling life assurance policies.

Until 1987, we had the so-called four pillars: banking, trust, brokerage, and insurance - all tightly compartmentalized. A revision of the Bank Act -- the legislation which governs our federally chartered financial institutions -- broke down the four pillars and encouraged more open competition. The banks, trust companies and insurance companies were allowed to enter each other's business, by either buying or building affiliates. This meant we could maximize the value of expensive distribution systems -- the branch network -- and move toward the financial supermarket model.
