East-West Conference of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank

“Structural Challenges and the Search for an Adequate Policy Mix in the EU and in Central and Eastern Europe”

Vienna, 10/31/2002

The motto of this year’s East-West Conference of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB) is "Structural Challenges in Europe." The Conference takes place from November 3 to 5, 2002, at Hotel Inter-Continental in Vienna.

This year, the East-West Conference undertakes a stocktaking exercise to assess reform needs in structural policy and the competitiveness of EU Member States and accession countries in Central and Eastern Europe. In this context, the Conference also deals with the question of financing EU enlargement. At the end of the Conference, a panel discussion is to provide an outlook on Europe’s future position in the global economy. High-ranking representatives from other central banks, from European and international organizations and from academia will act as speakers and panelists.

The Conference will be opened by the Governor of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank, Klaus Liebscher. The panel discussions will be chaired by Vice Governor Gertrude Tumpel-Gugerell, senior representatives from the industry and international institutions, and OeNB executives.
