International Investment Position
Austria’s International Investment Position (IIP) reflects Austrian residents’ financial claims (assets) on nonresidents along with their financial obligations (liabilities) to nonresidents. The IIP shows year-end stocks; its structure and scope broadly correspond to the recommendations of the IMF’s Balance of Payments Manual – 5th edition (1993). For a detailed description of the methodology underlying Austria’s International Investment Position, see Focus on Austria, issue 1/1999. The data presented on the liability side of the IIP are consistent with the data published in another series that exclusively covers debt instruments: the quarterly external debt statistics. However, unlike the tables representing Austria’s International Investment Position, which are primarily broken down functionally (according to financial instruments), the external debt statistics concentrate on economic sectors.
