VI Documentation related to domestic and international relations

VI. Documentation related to domestic and international relations

This record group consists of a collection of historical documents (prepared by one of the central bank’s many business units or received from external parties) that were not filed. The documents in this group cover many years and a broad range of topics. They include texts on central banking issues (e.g. records of negotiations concerning the renewal of the central bank’s rights (“Bank Privilegium”) from the 19th and early 20th century), but also macroeconomic research and analyses conducted by the OeNB from the second half of the 20th century.

A large proportion of these documents are records (correspondence, tables, lists, minutes, etc.) of the OeNB’s collaboration and cooperation with other central banks and commercial banks, as well as with international organizations (e.g. European Community, Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development or the International Monetary Fund).

Moreover, this section encompasses special publications, such as the monthly reports of the OeNB’s advisor to the League of Nations Commissioner (prepared between 1923 and 1926) or reports delivered to the Allied authorities between 1945 and 1955 providing them with information on the economic and monetary situation in Austria (“Alliiertenberichte”).

Since these documents were not indexed or recorded consistently and because quite a few groups of documents belonging to this record group are incomplete and can therefore only serve as examples, the documents were often archived according to topic, in line with the principle of pertinence. This simplifies the otherwise very cumbersome search for documents. The documents were organized to reflect the bank’s main fields of activity, such as banking, balance of payments as well as domestic and foreign financial markets.
