Storylines of money

Money makes the world go around. Money connects people. And money talks – quite literally actually. Beyond facilitating payment, banknotes and coins were used to spread messages long before the age of Facebook or Twitter. And to this very day, banknotes and coins are among the true hallmarks of any country. Money may serve to divide, or to unite. The choice of motifs, denominations and currency names tells many a story about a nation’s self-concept and (historic) ties with other countries.

A closer look at currency systems in Europe reveals a rich heritage, sometimes shared with faraway countries in other continents. Visit our new special exhibition to explore the imagery of coins as a visual reflection of such connections, ranging from coin names shared by more than one country to coins minted to emphasize dynastic ties.
