Financial literacy indicators

The OeNB Euro Survey collects data on various aspects of the financial literacy of private individuals since fall 2011. The presented indicators on financial literacy are standard questions first introduced by Lusardi and Mitchell (2011) in the 2004 US Health and Retirement Study and subsequently used in several countries.

  • Interest rate literacy
  • Inflation literacy
  • Exchange rate literacy
  • Financial risk literacy
  • Overall financial knowledge of respondents measured as the number of correct answers; the left chart refers to three financial literacy questions (compound interest, inflation and exchange rate risk, average 2011–2018) the right chart refers to four financial literacy questions (compound interest, inflation, exchange rate risk and financial risk, average 2012–2018).
