Financial accounts

Data contain for each listed economic sector the full set of financial assets and liabilities both for stocks and transactions on a quarterly and annual basis. In addition the net position and net lending/borrowing is illustrated.

Tables contain for each of listed financial instrument and for total liabilities the financial inter-linkage of a respective debtor vis a vis all creditors on an “from-whom-to-whom” basis. The tables contain stocks, transactions and revaluations on a quarterly and annual Basis.

The financial accounts are an integral part of the national accounts and provide stock and flow information on the financial investment and financing activities of the sectors of the economy. The tables present information on all economic sectors (like households, nonfinancial corporations or banks) broken down by financial instruments (like deposits, loans, debt securities and equity).

The financial accounts are compiled based on the European System of National Accounts 2010 (ESA 2010) in line with common international concepts and rules laid down by the United Nation’s System of National Accounts 2008 (SNA 2008) and in line with the 6th edition of the Balance of Payments and International Investment Position Manual (BPM6).

Data derived from financial accounts can be observed either broken down by economic sector for all financial instruments, both on the asset and on the liability side, or by selected financial instruments on a “from-whom-to-whom” basis. Data are shown in nominal values and not-seasonal adjusted on a quarterly and annual frequency.

Benchmark revision in September 2024

In September 2024, the external sector statistics and financial accounts data underwent a coordinated “benchmark revision”, as agreed at European level. This data revision included both systematic adjustments, such as more precise sector breakdowns and improved estimation models, as well as corrections to individual transactions that were subsequently brought to the OeNB's attention.

In the foreign trade statistics, the data was revised from 2013 onwards and published on the OeNB website on September 30, 2024. In the financial accounts, the data was revised back to 1995 and published on the OeNB website on October 8, 2024. The revision of the data was made in close coordination with Statistics Austria, which revised its national accounts data back to 1995.
