About the exhibition

Money is part of our everyday lives and it is hard to imagine a world without it. It serves as a means of payment, a store of value and a unit of account. Most importantly, however, it is important to note that: money concerns us all!

But what exactly is money? Today, coins and banknotes are the most familiar forms of cash, yet they are only two of many ways in which people have made payments throughout history.

In the Money Museum’s permanent exhibition “Money”, you will discover why cocoa beans were once weighed against silver and why a tulip bulb could mean the difference between being poor and rich. More than 250 objects bring the multifaceted history of money to life.

The exhibition also provides insights into the OeNB’s broad range of tasks and responsibilities. While these have evolved continuously since the Bank was founded more than 200 years ago, its guiding principles of stability and security have remained unchanged.
