Exchanging damaged banknotes

To swap damaged euro banknotes, please submit the damaged banknotes by post or consult the OeNB’s cash counters – we will help you to obtain replacements.

Submitting damaged euro banknotes

Damaged euro banknotes can be exchanged for fit banknotes at the OeNB if more than half of the banknote in question is intact. If only half the banknote or less is intact, proof must be provided that the missing part has been destroyed.

Banknotes that have been deliberately damaged will not be replaced. In such cases, the OeNB retains the damaged banknotes without offering any compensation.

If there are any doubts as to the authenticity or ownership of a submitted banknote, the OeNB may request additional evidence. For banknotes that are discoloured, soiled or have been treated with special substances, a written statement must be provided explaining the cause of the damage and any potential risks.

  • If you have any damaged banknotes, please contact your bank or the OeNB.
  • If you have any damaged coins, please contact your bank or Münze Österreich AG.

To exchange a damaged euro banknote, please submit it to the OeNB’s Cashier’s Division using the relevant submission form. Submissions can also be made in person at the OeNB’s cash counters in Vienna and Innsbruck.

As a general rule, no fees are charged for the exchange of damaged euro banknotes. An exception applies to banknotes that have been damaged by anti-theft systems that were triggered by mistake. In such cases, costs may be incurred.

If you wish to exchange euro banknotes worth EUR 15,000 or more in one or several related transactions, you will be required to provide proof of identity and proof of origin together with the designated form.

The same applies to submitting damaged Austrian schilling banknotes.
