Lord Nicholas Stern to speak about effective climate protection strategies for monetary and fiscal policymakers at OeNB event on October 7, 2021

The Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB) and SUERF – The European Money and Finance Forum have invited renowned experts to discuss the state of play in global and European action to protect the climate. “It will be crucial to build coalitions, mix policies and coordinate activities in Europe and beyond to achieve globally agreed emission goals,” OeNB Governor Robert Holzmann emphasized.

The keynote speaker at the forthcoming high-level online conference entitled “Climate protection: state of play, division of labor, steps forward” will be Lord Nicholas Stern, professor of economics and government at the London School of Economics. He is widely known for the so-called “Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change” that he released already 15 years ago on behalf of the UK government. This review was the first paper to discuss the effects of global warming on the world economy. Already back then, Lord Stern had demonstrated that the benefits of strong, early action on climate change outweigh the costs. In 2015, Lord Nicholas Stern received the Austrian Schumpeter Award for innovation in business management, economics and economic policy at the OeNB.

In addition to Lord Stern, the panel of speakers includes Leonore Gewessler (Austrian federal minister in charge of climate protection), representatives of international organizations, such as the IMF, the European Commission and the Deutsche Bundesbank, as well as business leaders, including Helmut List (AVL), Philip Hildebrand (BlackRock) and Moritz Kraemer (CountryRisk).

The conference will be held as a webex event in the afternoon of October 7, 2021 (2 p.m. to 5 p.m.) If you would like to join the event, please register online with SUERF – The European Money and Finance Forum. The conference language will be English.
