Exchanging other legacy currencies

As part of the introduction of the euro in Bulgaria on January 1, 2026, the OeNB will exchange Bulgarian lev (BGN) banknotes from January 2 to March 2, 2026 at the fixed rate of 1.95583 Bulgarian lev per 1 euro. This service is free of charge. Neither coins nor old series of banknotes without legal tender status will be exchanged. The amount is limited to BGN 2,000 for any given party/transaction on any one day and can be performed at the cash counters of the OeNB in Vienna and Innsbruck, addresses and opening hours can be found here.

As a rule, the OeNB does not handle foreign cash. If you wish to exchange foreign cash that is legal tender, please use the services of a commercial bank. Should you need to exchange legacy currencies of other euro area countries, you will need to do so at the respective national central bank or one of its branch offices. Please note that exchange deadlines may differ from country to country.
