Equipment testing

The Test Center of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB Test Center) tests different types of banknote handling machines (including banknote authentication machines). These tests are carried out in line with the Eurosystem’s common test procedures.

  • We support manufacturers of banknote handling machines in developing and improving their products. We do so by providing a wide range of representative counterfeit euro banknotes that manufacturers can use to test their devices.
  • Like the other national central banks (NCBs) of the Eurosystem, the OeNB runs tests of banknote handling machine types. The tests are conducted using genuine and counterfeit euro banknotes.
    • Counterfeit detection test
Assesses the capacity to authenticate genuine euro banknotes and to separate them from representative counterfeits.
    • Fitness detection test
Assesses the capacity to sort euro banknotes according to their fitness for circulation. This also involves separating banknotes that are fit for circulation from those which are not.
    • Tracing system test
For customer-operated machines, the proper functioning of the tracing system is also verified. This makes it possible to trace who has made a deposit.
  • Once a machine type passes a test which is carried out by an NCB, it is included on the European Central Bank’s list of successfully tested banknote handling machines.
  • New counterfeit banknotes may emerge at any time, exhibiting properties differing from those of the counterfeits used during a specific test. Therefore, published test results merely reflect whether a certain type of banknote handling machine detected the counterfeits in the test deck used on the day the test was carried out.
  • The Test Center tests new banknote authentication sensor technology in cooperation with manufacturers.
  • Moreover, it cooperates with the Coins National Analysis Centre (CNAC) of Münze Österreich AG in testing coin processing machines.
