“Economic and monetary policy under wartime conditions – implications for CESEE”

(, Vienna)

Conference on European Economic Integration (CEEI) 2022: the flagship event organized by the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB)

On November 21 and 22, 2022, Austria’s central bank will hold its annual Conference on European Economic Integration under the heading “Economic and monetary policy under wartime conditions – implications for CESEE.” The conference will bring together renowned international experts and policymakers to discuss the economic repercussions from current crises.

The world is facing a concurrence of crises: the war in Ukraine and the ongoing recovery from COVID-19 on top of the effects of climate change. With its 2022 Conference on European Economic Integration (CEEI), Austria’s central bank seeks to develop a deeper understanding of how these transformational crises are likely to impact the economies of Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe (CESEE) in the short and medium term.

On November 21 and 22, 2022, internationally recognized speakers will focus on the most burning questions such as: What are the challenges for monetary policy given high inflation, elevated political uncertainty and locally diverging interest rates? Will the current energy crisis trigger faster restructuring toward renewable energy sources and alternative suppliers? How to deal with demographic challenges and the related transformation of CESEE labor markets?

One panel will be devoted to the banking sector, a topic particularly relevant from a central bank’s point of view and we will address the rescoping of markets and products made necessary by the situation in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine and the quest for green transition.

Hosted by OeNB Governor Robert Holzmann, the CEEI 2022 will welcome distinguished central bank representatives from the CESEE region as speakers, including Deputy Governor Leonardo Badea (National Bank of Romania), First Deputy Governor Marta Kightley (National Bank of Poland), Governor Gent Sejko (Bank of Albania) and Chairman of the Board Gediminas Šimkus (Bank of Lithuania). Graciela L. Kaminsky (Professor of Economics and International Affairs at George Washington University) and Guntram B. Wolff (Director and CEO of the German Council on Foreign Relations) will deliver keynote lectures. Michael Faulend (Vice Governor, National Bank of Croatia) will give the dinner speech.
