Looking back on 30 years of transition – and looking 30 years ahead

(, Vienna)

Conference on European Economic Integration 2019 organized by the Oesterreichische Nationalbank

The Conference on European Economic Integration (CEEI) 2019 of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB) will take place on November 25 and 26, 2019, at the Vienna Marriott Hotel. To commemorate the fall of the Iron Curtain 30 years ago, in 1989, the CEEI 2019 will explore the following key questions about transition in Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe (CESEE).

What have the last 30 years accomplished?

The CEEI 2019 will look at successes and shortcomings of this historic transformation, the impact of political and global factors, and the lessons to be learned from fast progress in the emerging economies in Asia.

What can we expect in the next 30 years?

The CEEI 2019 will discuss challenges for monetary policy and financial stability as well as long-term determinants of economic growth in CESEE: factors like digitalization, climate change and demographic trends.

The CEEI 2019 will be hosted by OeNB Governor Robert Holzmann. A number of high-level CESEE central bank representatives will contribute to the conference, e.g. Ana Ivković (National Bank of Serbia), Jiří Rusnok (Czech National Bank), Boštjan Vasle and Primož Dolenc (Bank of Slovenia) and Boris Vujčić (Croatian National Bank). Anders Åslund (Senior Fellow, Atlantic Council), Beata Javorcik (Chief Economist, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development) and Martin Selmayr (Ambassador of the European Commission to Austria and former Secretary-General, European Commission) will deliver keynote lectures. Anton Pelinka (Professor of Political Science, Central European University, retired) will give the dinner speech.
