Ewald Nowotny, Governor of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank, was bestowed the Magyar Nemzeti Bank’s Lamfalussy Award

György Matolcsy, Governor of the Magyar Nemzeti Bank (“MNB”), presented the first Lamfalussy Award to Ewald Nowotny, Governor of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB) at a gala event tonight. Márton Nagy, Executive Director of the MNB received the Popovics Award, in recognition of his outstanding professional work.

The aim of the Lamfalussy Award, which was founded by the Governor of the MNB, is to recognize exceptional international efforts and lifetime achievements influencing the work of the Magyar Nemzeti Bank and international monetary policy. Based on a proposal of the MNB’s technical committee, Ewald Nowotny was the first to receive the recognition, which has been named after Alexandre Lamfalussy, the first President of the European Monetary Institute.

The Popovics Award, named after the first Governor of the MNB, was presented to Márton Nagy, Executive Director of the MNB, who received the award from György Matolcsy in recognition of his outstanding professional work in the fields of economics and finance.

Governor Nowotny donates the prize money to the Central European University. As a Hungarian-accredited graduate institution with a tradition of contributing to excellence in Hungarian higher education, the University plans to designate Nowotny’s gift to establish a scholarship fund intended for outstanding Hungarian students.
