Addressing challenges for CESEE and Europe at large

Upcoming OeNB conference offers modern take on structural reforms

On November 20 and 21, 2017, the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB) will hold its 2017 Conference on European Economic Integration (CEEI) at the Vienna Marriott Hotel. The conference, entitled “A modern take on structural reforms – past and future challenges for CESEE and Europe at large,” will investigate which reform steps are necessary to provide for prosperous labor, product and capital markets in Europe.

During this year’s CEEI, internationally renowned speakers will explore strategies to facilitate Europe’s return to balanced growth and convergence, while also revisiting the profound market reforms that have been carried out in Central, Eastern and Southeastern European (CESEE) countries over the past two decades.

In line with a modern understanding of structural reforms that goes beyond liberalization and deregulation, speakers will also highlight social aspects and distributional effects of such reforms. Moreover, the conference will serve to assess the implications of future challenges arising from digitalization, deindustrialization and the emerging protectionist threat to Europe.

The CEEI 2017 will be hosted by OeNB Governor Ewald Nowotny. A number of CESEE central bank governors will contribute to the conference, e.g. Boštjan Jazbec (Slovenia), Jozef Makúch (Slovakia), György Matolcsy (Hungary), Jiří Rusnok (Czech Republic) and Member of the Management Board Paweł Szałamacha (Poland). Georg Fischer (Former Director, DG Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, European Commission) and Chief Economist Sergei Guriev (European Bank for Reconstruction and Development) will deliver keynote lectures.
